The Institute is working towards the fulfillment of the objective set by members to develop structured courses in the fields of transportation and regulated industries. The University of Calgary and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) have collaborated on the development of a four-year program in transportation. A student entering the program will have the opportunity of taking two years at SAIT, presumably in the fields of supply chain management and logistics. Successful completion will result in the awarding of a diploma which, at the student's option, can be laddered into a further two-years at the University of Calgary with concentration on transportation economics, management law, environment, political science, geography, etc. leading to a degree program in transportation.
The collaborative program developed by the University of Calgary and SAIT for a major degree in transportation studies has been forwarded to Alberta Learning as a candidate for ACCESS Funding. Letters of support for the program submitted by Van Horne member companies have been forwarded to the Hon. Lyle Oberg.
The Institute is participating with other companies and learning organizations in the development of the Joint Learning Initiative. Participants in this initiative are working with Alberta Learning towards the development of a supply chain and logistics module for teaching at the high school level. Developing an interest in transportation as a career in the high schools will provide additional demand for the 2 plus 2 SAIT/UofC collaboration referred to above.
